Frequently asked questions

What is Wochly?

Wochly is a free web app for keeping a personal, ranked list of every movie and TV show you watch. You say whether you liked a title, then answer a couple of quick “which did you like more?” questions, and Wochly places it in your list and gives it a score from 0 to 10. It also shows what’s best on the streaming services you already pay for, and suggests what to watch next based on your rankings.

How does ranking work?

When you rate a title you first pick “I liked it”, “It was fine” or “I didn’t like it”. Wochly then compares it with titles you’ve already rated in that group, usually 2–4 quick questions, and inserts it in the right spot. Movies are only ever compared with movies, and shows only with shows, so each has its own list. Scores are spread evenly within each group: liked 6.7–10, fine 3.4–6.6, didn’t like 0–3.3. You can also drag titles to reorder your list by hand.

How is Wochly different from Letterboxd, IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes or JustWatch?

Letterboxd and IMDb ask you to pick a star rating or score yourself; Wochly builds your scores from side-by-side comparisons, which tends to give a more consistent personal ranking, and it covers TV shows as well as movies. Rotten Tomatoes summarizes critics’ reviews; Wochly is about your own taste and your friends’. JustWatch tells you where something streams; Wochly uses JustWatch’s availability data (via TMDB) but focuses on which of the titles you can stream are actually best, ranked by ratings.

Which streaming services does it cover?

US availability for titles included with a standard subscription to: Netflix, Prime Video, Max, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock, Paramount+, Apple TV+, Crunchyroll, Starz, MGM+, AMC+, Discovery+, Shudder, BritBox, Acorn TV, MUBI, Criterion Channel. Free ad-supported services are listed separately: Tubi, Pluto TV, The Roku Channel, Prime Video (free with ads). Paid add-on channels (for example a “Max Amazon Channel”), cable on-demand, and rentals or purchases don’t count as “on your service”; rent and buy options are shown separately on each title page.

Is Wochly free?

Yes. Wochly is free to use. There are no ads and no paid tier.

Do I need an account?

No. You can rate titles without signing in, and they’re saved in your browser. Signing in (with a one-time email code or link) saves your list to your account so it works across devices, lets you follow friends, and lets you share lists.

What about privacy?

Your username, your ranked list and who you follow are public so friends can see them. Your email address, your streaming services, your Want to watch list, titles you’ve hidden and your “Never show me” settings are private. Wochly does not sell your data or show ads.

Where does the data come from?

Movie and TV details, posters and TMDB scores come from The Movie Database (TMDB). Streaming availability comes from JustWatch via TMDB. Community scores come from Wochly users’ own rankings once a title has at least 5 ratings; until then Wochly shows TMDB’s score, weighted by how many people voted, so a title with a handful of votes can’t outrank a well-established favorite.

How are recommendations made?

“For you” starts from the titles you ranked highest, plus your Want to watch list, and looks at similar titles, recommendations and other work by the same directors, creators and lead actors. Titles you didn’t like count against similar ones. Results are limited to what’s included on your services, skip anything you’ve rated, saved or hidden, and are shown highest rated first.
